Revolutionizing Reading: Lia González's "The Beginning"

Modular Books Meet Fashion in a Unique Design Concept

Spanish designer Lia González has created a novel fusion of literature and fashion in her award-winning project, "The Beginning". This innovative design concept, which combines modular reading with the creation of book-suits, has been recognized for its originality and impact on the design world.

The inspiration for "The Beginning" came from a 16th-century codex known as "The Costume Codex", considered by many to be the first fashion catalog. González's design applies a modular system to the codex, resulting in four book-suits that not only explain the redesign of the codex but also become the redesign of the suit itself.

The unique properties of "The Beginning" lie in its modular grid system. This system allows for the creation of books that can be read in a linear fashion, then unfolded to reveal a form. In this case, the form is a bird suit with human proportions. The book-suit, when folded, measures 20 x 20 cm, but when fully opened, it extends to 200 x 50 cm.

The creation of "The Beginning" involves a detailed process. A modular grid is first generated, to which a pattern is adapted. The modular book is then created and folded into a 20 x 20 cm module. The interior and exterior of the suit-book are designed, and the final product is made from satin cardboard with golden ink.

The project, which began in January 2016 and concluded a year later, was selected as one of the best "Design Young Talents" of 2017 in Spain. It was also exhibited at various venues, including the "Espacio Z" of Zuamaia, organized by VEGAP, and the "Contemporary Art Center" in Valencia.

Despite the challenges of finding a system that could transform a suit into a readable book and adapting forms to a perfect grid, González succeeded in bringing her innovative design to life. The result is a unique reading experience that expands the boundaries of book design and fashion.

"The Beginning" is not just a testament to González's creativity and talent, but also a reflection of her commitment to pushing the boundaries of design. As she continues to explore new ways of creating book-suits through modular grids, readers and fashion enthusiasts alike can look forward to more innovative designs from this talented designer.
